[Website] Historical Psychological Instruments of the old Taihoku Imperial University preserved in the National Taiwan University

In 1946, Professor Fang Dong-mei, the chair of the Department of Philosophy, National Taiwan University, found out that there is a great quantity of valuable documents left in the Psychology Research Lab of Taihoku Imperial University, founded in 1928 by the Japanese colonial administration. Those documents include 4000 psychological books, 1500 journals and 150 experimental instruments. Therefore, Professor Fang encouraged Mr. Su Shiang-yeu, a professor in his department at that time, to establish the Department of Psychology. In 1949, the Department of Psychology was officially admitted by Ministry of Education as one of the College of Science departments.

In the beginning, the newly established Department was short of funds. As a result, the psychological instruments were often self-made. Some instruments preserved from the Japanese Colonial Period were modified into modern experimental instruments. Furthermore, the space of the Department was insufficient for the instruments. Moved from Department of Philosophy, College of Literature, to “Small Yellow Hall” and finally to the North and South Halls today, the Department has damaged and lost some of its instruments. However, the Department endeavors to preserve all the precious historical remains of psychology in Taiwan despite the restricted space.

A total of 55 experimental instruments which were originally in the “Psychology Research Lab” are presently preserved in the Department. They are placed in the basement and the classroom cabinet on the second floor in the South Hall. Besides, the Digital Archives of “Psychology Classical Equipment” was built on the website of the Department of Psychology. In the lobby of the South Hall, a navigation showcase with touch panel is available and served as classical instruments guidance.

Since the space of the building is insufficient, the way to display these historical instruments will be based on the concept of the “Corner Museum.” That is to say, to display the historical background, the function and the operation methods of these instruments in the corners of the building. If the exhibition space is sufficient, the exhibition of a series of psychological instruments evolution (from the physical structures such as spring-power, machinery, optics and electromagnetic in the last century to modern computer applications) could be held in the future.
