Diffusion MRI provides a unique window into the structural organization of the human brain. In this talk, I will discuss our work from two complementary perspectives: understanding the individual brain and understanding variation across populations. At the individual level, tractography can map white matter pathways, while differential tractography extends this approach to identify changes in brain connectivity over time. Shape and quantitative MRI analyses provide additional ways to characterize anatomical and tissue properties beyond connectivity. At the population level, brain templates and connectivity atlases provide common references for studying anatomical variation across individuals, while correlational tractography identifies pathways associated with behavioral, demographic, and clinical variables. I will also discuss our recent efforts to make tens of thousands of publicly available diffusion MRI datasets readily accessible for population-scale brain research, substantially lowering the barriers to large-scale studies. Finally, I will introduce recent developments in integrating AI agents with neuroimaging analysis, allowing complex, multistep analyses to be carried out through natural-language interaction. Together, these developments illustrate how brain mapping is progressing from individual anatomy toward population neuroscience and AI-assisted exploration of brain structure and function.
