講題:Dialectical Leadership in a Contradictory World

演講摘要:

Prior research suggests that the organizational context is not only full of complication but also contradiction. How do effective executives address this issue? Some scholars maintain that both cognitive complexity and behavioral complexity are required to effectively cope with endless organizational paradox. However, few have directly addressed top managers’ mental assumptions and cognitive strategies behind it. Precisely, cognition takes place within one’s worldview. Therefore, both ontological and epistemological levels should be included into study when this research question is addressed. 

        Through a multiple-case, inductive study of three world-class leaders, we found that, ontologically speaking, effective executives tend to see inherent contradiction in reality, which begets a thesis-antithesis-synthesis process, as proposed by Hegelian Dialectic. In addition, to achieve synthesis, it requires appropriate efforts in their views. Epistemologically speaking, effective executives are inclined to adopt Socratic Method to arrive at higher truths through contradiction. However, they use formal logic too when it comes to their principles or beliefs, which suggests that they perceive two sorts of contradiction in reality, i.e. impossible contradiction and necessary contradiction. Lastly, ineffective executives may tend to perceive impossible contradiction only in their worldviews, thus losing the integrative potential that moves necessary contradiction into synthesis.

講題:當代儒商的立命與立業:內聖外王如何可能?

演講摘要:

儒家相當重視「內聖外王」的君子典範,也就是透過修身,將自我層層外推,乃至於齊家、治國、平天下。雖然傳統儒家對於「內聖」與「外王」的本質內涵有諸多論述,但對於具體的實踐方法,則語焉不詳,過於言簡意賅,以致於在不同的時代背景之下,都各自有其不同的詮釋與作法。在現今的工商社會中,傳統儒家所提的內聖外王將如何適用?展現過程為何?都值得進行深入的探討。因此,本研究以當代組織心理學的視角,蒐集了個人生命史等資料,來查看內聖如何轉換外王的過程。透過一位當代儒商的質性研究,來了解創業家的個體我如何轉變為組織我。結果顯示,創業家自我擴張的過程,大致上可區分為「自我認定」、「創業家角色認定」及「組織認定」三個階段;這三個階段的自我認定內涵具有相同的核心價值,但由於環境因素與其扮演的角色有所不同,因而各階段衍生出來的認定表徵略有差異。據此本研究建立了初步的理論模型,而可釐清內聖外王在當代的意涵。

講題:Performance of Model Selection Criteria in Structural Equation Modeling

演講摘要:

Comparison of multiple models that represent competing substantive theories can be a useful application of structural equation modeling (SEM). Among many model selection rules the Akaike’s information criterion (AIC) (Akaike, 1974) and the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) (Schwarz, 1978) are the two most commonly used criteria for selecting an optimal model.In response to the sparse research on their empirical behaviors in SEM, this study evaluates the performance of AIC, BIC, and several of their modifications accordingly. The inclusion or exclusion of true model and overfitting models, values of omitted parameters and sample sizes are manipulated to investigate whether the examined model selection criteria can choose the optimal model. Overall, the BIC related criteria are superior in large sample sizes, and in contrast the AIC related criteria outperform BIC when sample sizes and values of omitted parameters are small.

講題:“Face” and Nation

演講摘要:

While previous research overwhelmingly focuses on the study of face at the personal level, this research intends to explore the concept, role, and dynamics of face at the national level. After establishing the construct of national face in the Pilot Study, Study 1 reveals that in both East and West, face at the national level exhibits a pattern opposites of that at the personal level. Study 2 & 3 thus seek to examine the processing of different cultural mechanisms of personal face and national face in the East and West. By uncovering the various aspects of national face and ultimately how it shapes international relations, the overarching goal is to increase cross-cultural understanding in the hope of decreasing potential international conflicts.
